HUNTERSVILLE – It’s time for the annual Charlotte Symphony Concert at McGuire Nuclear Station’s EnergyExplorium. The concert begins at 8:15 p.m. ONStarz, a group of Duke Energy employees, will provide a prelude performance at 7 p.m. with a selection of oldies but goodies. In addition, the Carolina Raptor Center will release a rehabilitated Barred Owl shortly before the concert.
The symphony, conducted by Albert George Schram, will perform its “Music for Lovers” program of orchestral favorites including the Wedding March from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and the “Romeo and Juliet Overture.”

Admission and parking are free. Bring a blanket, pack a picnic and come early to get a good spot on the lawn. Boaters may anchor in the EnergyExplorium’s cove at the southern tip of Lake Norman. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase through the East Lincoln High School’s Band Booster Club.

“Our symphony concert has become a signature event for the Lake Norman area and is our biggest community event of the year,” said Valerie Patterson, communications manager for McGuire Nuclear Station. “Last year, we had our largest crowd ever with more than 7,640 attendees and 140 boats anchored in the cove. This concert really has become a favorite where families, friends and Lake Norman neighbors come together to enjoy the lake and hear great music.”

Insurance Mistakes to Avoid: Don’t Risk Being Underinsured

Too many Americans mistakenly believe that the coverage limits of their home owners insurance policy are linked to the market value of their home, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

In the I.I.I.’s 2011 Insurance Pulse Survey, conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation, nearly half (48%) of survey respondents came to that incorrect conclusion.

“The real estate value of a home, that is the price you can buy or sell it for, has absolutely nothing to with the amount of insurance needed to financially protect the home owner in the event of a fire or other disaster,” said Jeanne M. Salvatore, senior vice president and consumer spokesperson for the I.I.I. “Reducing insurance coverage because the market value of a home has decreased can result in being dangerously underinsured.”

One out of three respondents to the Pulse Survey reported that they purchased less home owners or auto insurance as a way to save money. A better strategy would be to take a higher deductible, which can substantially reduce insurance costs. Home and car owners can then put the savings into a purchasing the right amount and type of insurance for their specific needs, pointed out Salvatore.

Another way to save money is to comparison shop, something that seven out of 10 Pulse Survey respondents said they did to save on both their home and auto insurance needs.

I.I. I. says three biggest insurance mistakes home owners can make are:

1. Insuring a home for its real estate value rather than for the cost of rebuilding. When real estate prices go down, some home owners may think they can reduce the amount of insurance on their home. But insurance is designed to cover the cost of rebuilding, not the sales price of the home. You should make sure that you have enough coverage to completely rebuild your home and replace your belongings.

A better way to save: Raise your deductible. An increase from $500 to $1,000 could save up to 25% on your premium payments.
2. Selecting an insurance company by price alone. It is important to choose a company with competitive prices, but also one that is financially sound and provides good customer service.

A better way to save: Check the financial health of a company with independent rating agencies and ask friends and family for recommendations. You should select an insurance company that will respond to your needs and handle claims fairly and efficiently.
3. Dropping flood insurance. Damage from flooding is not covered under standard home owners and renters insurance policies. Coverage is available from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), as well as from some private insurance companies. Many home owners are unaware they are at risk for flooding, but in fact 25% of all flood losses occur in low risk areas. Furthermore, with the significant snow fall this winter, spring related flooding may be particularly severe, thus increasing the importance of purchasing flood insurance.

A better way to save: Before purchasing a home, check with the NFIP to determine whether the property is situated in a flood zone; if so, consider a less risky area. If you are already living in a designated flood zone, look at mitigation efforts that can reduce your risk of flood damage and consider purchasing flood insurance. Existing-Home Sales Rise Again in January

The uptrend in existing-home sales continues, with January sales rising for the third consecutive month with a pace that is now above year-ago levels, according to the National Association of REALTORS®.

Existing-home sales1, which are completed transactions that include single-family, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops, increased 2.7 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.36 million in January from a downwardly revised 5.22 million in December, and are 5.3 percent above the 5.09 million level in January 2010. This is the first time in seven months that sales activity was higher than a year earlier.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, said the improvement is good but could be better. “The uptrend in home sales is consistent with improvements in the economy and jobs, which are helping boost consumer confidence,” Yun said. “The extremely favorable housing affordability conditions are a big factor, but buyers have been constrained by unnecessarily tight credit. As a result, there are abnormally high levels of all-cash purchases, along with rising investor activity.”

A parallel NAR practitioner survey2 shows first-time buyers purchased 29 percent of homes in January, down from 33 percent in December and 40 percent in January 2010 when an extended tax credit was in place.

Investors accounted for 23 percent of purchases in January, up from 20 percent in December and 17 percent in January 2010; the balance of sales were to repeat buyers. All-cash sales rose to 32 percent in January from 29 percent in December and 26 percent in January 2010.

“Increases in all-cash transactions, the investor market share and distressed home sales all go hand-in-hand. With tight credit standards, it’s not surprising to see so much activity where cash is king and investors are taking advantage of conditions to purchase undervalued homes,” Yun said.

All-cash purchases are at the highest level since NAR started measuring these purchases monthly in October 2008, when they accounted for 15 percent of the market. The average of all-cash deals was 20 percent in 2009, rising to 28 percent last year.

The national median existing-home price3 for all housing types was $158,800 in January, down 3.7 percent from January 2010. Distressed homes edged up to a 37 percent market share in January from 36 percent in December; it was 38 percent in January 2010.

NAR President Ron Phipps, broker-president of Phipps Realty in Warwick, R.I., said the median price is being dampened by unusual market factors. “Unprecedented levels of all-cash purchases, primarily of distressed homes sold at deep discounts, undoubtedly pulls the median price downward,” Phipps said. “Given the levels of inventory we see today, we believe that traditional homes in good condition have held their value.”

Total housing inventory at the end of January fell 5.1 percent to 3.38 million existing homes available for sale, which represents a 7.6-month supply4 at the current sales pace, down from an 8.2-month supply in December. The inventory supply is at the lowest level since December 2009 when there was a 7.3-month supply.

According to Freddie Mac, the national average commitment rate for a 30-year, conventional, fixed-rate mortgage rose to 4.76 percent in January from 4.71 percent in December; the rate was 5.03 percent in January 2010.

Single-family home sales rose 2.4 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.69 million in January from 4.58 million in December, and are 4.9 percent higher than the 4.47 million level in January 2010. The median existing single-family home price was $159,400 in January, down 2.7 percent from a year ago.

Existing condominium and co-op sales increased 4.7 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 670,000 in January from 640,000 in December, and are 7.9 percent above the 621,000-unit pace one year ago. The median existing condo price5 was $154,900 in January, which is 10.2 percent below January 2010.

Regionally, existing-home sales in the Northeast fell 4.6 percent to an annual pace of 830,000 in January from a spike in December and are 1.2 percent below January 2010. The median price in the Northeast was $236,500, which is 4.0 percent below a year ago.

Existing-home sales in the Midwest rose 1.8 percent in January to a level of 1.14 million and are 3.6 percent above a year ago. The median price in the Midwest was $126,300, which is 3.2 percent below January 2010.

In the South, existing-home sales increased 3.6 percent to an annual pace of 2.02 million in January and are 8.0 percent higher than January 2010. The median price in the South was $136,600, down 2.1 percent from a year ago.

Existing-home sales in the West rose 7.9 percent to an annual level of 1.37 million in January and are 7.0 percent above January 2010. The median price in the West was $193,200, down 5.7 percent from a year ago.

The 22nd Annual Masonic Blood Drive continues the time-honored tradition of local Masons serving the public by strengthening community blood resources. Both the Masons and the public at large benefit in ways that save many lives.
In January 1990, a group of Masonic Lodges from Iredell and Catawba counties began a special effort to increase blood donations in the area. They chose the Christmas and New Year’s season for the drive due the decline in donations and the often critical need for blood during this period.
Over the past 21 years, the Masonic Blood Drive grew to be one of the largest annual blood drives in the Charlotte service area. In 2011, the Masons hope to collect more than 550 pints of life-saving blood.
The Masonic Community Blood Drive will be from 8 a.m.- 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at the Statesville Civic Center.
Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental permission) and be in general good health. TURTLE ROCK - A LAKE NORMAN WATERMARK

I think I was about 10 years old the first time I saw it. My brother and I rented a boat at the marina near Long Island bridge for $2.00 per day, and with a 2.5 horsepower outboard, we made our way down the lake.

There are a number of things about Lake Norman that haven't changed through the years, and one of them is Turtle Rock. On a rocky point just out of Lake Norman State Park neck, it looks the same today as it did many years ago. Sometimes the "eye" of the turtle has been freshly painted by some anonymous lake artist, but otherwise just the same.

I enjoy seeing some things that remain the same - like Turtle Rock.

TOWN CLOCK ON THE SQUARE

A landmark in downtown Statesville is our town clock. On June 26th, 1890, Squire White, with a few friends and his mare used winches and pulleys to lift the clock to it's current resting place on top of the building at the intersection of Broad and Center Streets.

I can remember walking by the building as a child and looking up at the clock. Dr. W.C. Current, a dentist, had his office on the 3rd floor. You can still see his name printed on the window today.

The 3rd floor also housed the Masonic Lodge - a fixture in our community since 1795.

It used to be that the clock didn't keep very good time, but has been quite reliable for a number of years now.

Downtown Statesville and the town clock. I can't imagine one without the other.

THE COOK SHACK IN UNION GROVE

Everyone has a slogan these days, and slogans sometimes have little to do with reality.
Fratelli's at the shopping center in Doolie - where Perth Road and Highway 150 intersect is a great little restaurant. Short on ambiance but long on food quality and service, it is a gem among Italian restaurants.
The food is very, very, good, and the garlic bread is the best I have had - ever - and I've had my share of garlic bread.
The salads are great!
These are very nice people celebrating their second year of business in the Lake Normnan area.
Give them a try - they will not dissapoint!

Humane Society of Iredell Participates in Spay Day Campaign

Humane Society of Iredell is participating in The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International’s 16th annual Spay Day campaign. This year’s Spay Day will take place on Tuesday, February 23. The purpose of Spay Day is to inspire people to save animal lives by spaying or neutering pets and feral cats.

Humane Society of Iredell is participating in Spay Day by offering a complementary gift to those who schedule their animals spay or neuter appointment through HSI for the dates of February 24, 2010 or March 10, 2010.

HSI offers a low-cost spay/neuter program for families who have unsterilized pets but find it financially restrictive to have them spayed or neutered.

HSI serves the community by offering two transports every month to the SNIP Regional Spay/Neuter Clinic at the Humane Society of Catawba County in Hickory, North Carolina for low-cost spay/neuter surgeries.

On the second and fourth Wednesday of every month there is a transport pick up at 8:00 AM at the Humane Society of Iredell Adoption Center – located at 110 Robinson Road, Mooresville, NC 28117. The animals will be returned to the HSI Adoption Center at 9:00 AM the following day for their owners to pick up. All appointments MUST be made at least one week in advance.

Appointments can be scheduled by calling (704) 663-3330 or by e-mailing spay@iredellhumane.org. You may also visit the HIS Adoption Center to complete an application. A drop box for applications is available if you stop by during non-business hours.

HSI offers other services to the animals including—vaccines, testing for heartworms (dogs), testing for FeLV/FIV (cats), nail trims, hernia repair, micro-chipping—through the SNIP Clinic. All of these medical services are offered at a very affordable rate.

This compost is made from processed leaves and brush and is good for gardens and yards.

Who Qualifies for the Extended Credit?•First-time home buyers who purchase homes between November 7, 2009 and April 30, 2010.

•Current home owners purchasing a home between November 7, 2009 and April 30, 2010, who have used the home being sold or vacated as a principal residence for five consecutive years within the last eight.
To qualify as a “first-time home buyer” the purchaser or his/her spouse may not have owned a residence during the three years prior to the purchase.

If you purchased a home between January 1, 2009 and November 6, 2009, please see: 2009 First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit.

Which Properties Are Eligible?
The Extended Home Buyer Tax Credit may be applied to primary residences, including: single-family homes, condos, townhomes, and co-ops.

How Much Is Available?
The maximum allowable credit for first-time home buyers is $8,000.

The maximum allowable credit for current homeowners is $6,500.

How is a Buyer's Credit Amount Determined?
Each home buyer’s tax credit is determined by two additional factors:

1.The price of the home.
2.The buyer's income.

Price

Under the Extended Home Buyer Tax Credit, credit may only be awarded on homes purchased for $800,000 or less.

Buyer Income

Under the Extended Home Buyer Tax Credit, which is effective on November 7, 2009, single buyers with incomes up to $125,000 and married couples with incomes up to $225,000—may receive the maximum tax credit.

These income limits have changed from the 2009 First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit limits. If you purchased a home between January 1, 2009 and November 6, 2009, please see 2009 First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit.

If the Buyer(s)’ Income Exceeds These Limits, Can He/She Still Get a Credit?
Yes, some buyers may still be eligible for the credit.

The credit decreases for buyers who earn between $125,000 and $145,000 for single buyers and between $225,000 and $245,000 for home buyers filing jointly. The amount of the tax credit decreases as his/her income approaches the maximum limit. Home buyers earning more than the maximum qualifying income—over $145,000 for singles and over $245,000 for couples are not eligible for the credit.

Can a Buyer Still Qualify If He/She Closes After April 30, 2010?
Under the Extended Home Buyer Tax Credit, as long as a written binding contract to purchase is in effect on April 30, 2010, the purchaser will have until July 1, 2010 to close.

Will the Tax Credit Need to Be Repaid?
No. The buyer does not need to repay the tax credit, if he/she occupies the home for three years or more. However, if the property is sold during this three-year period, the full amount credit will be recouped on the sale. TOUGH AS A PANSIE?

You're a Pansie! Although the term is not often used today, we all know it is meant to describe weakness in an individual. I don't know how the term originated - perhaps because looking at the flower, an uninformed observer might see the delicate blossom and deduce that the plant is frail and weakly.
Quite the contrary, there aren't many bedding plants tougher than the pansie - particularly in winter,and particularly in our climate zone.
I've planted them for years - usually in late October, and they offer color in an otherwise bleak landscape all winter long. Despite freezing temperatures and sometime a covering of snow, they persevere.
They are easy to plant, inexpensive, and only require weekly watering in the event we do not receive any rain, and just a bit of slow release fertilizer every few weeks. Deadheading helps as well.

UNION GROVE BURGER BARN

Union Grove - just north of Statesville, is a great community. Blessed with pastoral landscapes and smiling faces, it is an oasis just off I77. Thousands pass this way daily without taking the Highway 901 Union Grove exit. It's a shame, because if you never visit Union Grove, you never have the opportunity to eat a burger at The Burger Barn.
A great little establishment with excellent service and burgers that are way above the ordinary. I am listing some beautiful land on Indian Hill Road this week, and the icing on the cake is I'll have to take my client to the Burger Barn. The sacrifices we Real Estate agents have to make sometimes.

No matter how baffling the energy situation is, homeowners are definitely seeing its results in skyrocketing energy bills. Here are some suggestions for lowering your energy costs:
Caulk around foundation walls, pipe outlets, the clothes dryer vent and any other gaps on the outside of the house. Air infiltration from electric switch and plug outlets can be significant, too, so it's smart to insert draft blockers. They're inexpensive and readily available at hardware stores and home centers. And don't forget to weather strip overhead doors of attached garages.
In cold weather, set the thermostat at 68 degrees and leave it alone during the day; overnight, lower setting by 5 to 10 degrees. And make sure the thermostat isn't affected by drafts that will give an incorrect reading.
Develop energy-saving window habits, too. In the winter, open curtains or shades of east, south and west-facing windows on sunny days to let the sun heat the house. Close them at night to preserve heat. Keep the draperies closed all day on north-facing windows. Turn the heat way down in rooms you don't use. And check with your utility company to see if they offer free home inspections and energy surveys.

Grilled Chicken, Peaches and Arugula
Ingredients:
4 6-oz boneless, skinless chicken breasts
2 TBSP plus 1 TSP olive oil, kosher salt &
black pepper
2 med red onions, sliced into
1/2-inch-thick rounds
3 peaches, cut into wedges
1 bunch arugula, thick stems removed
(about 4 cups)
2 TBSP balsamic vinegar
2 oz blue cheese, broken into pieces
Directions:
Heat grill to medium-high. Brush the chicken with 1 teaspoon of the oil and season with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper. In a bowl, toss the onions, peaches, 1 tablespoon of the oil, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper.

Grill the chicken and onions until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are tender, 5 to 6 minutes per side. Grill the peaches until charred, 2 minutes per side.

Toss the arugula with the onions, peaches, vinegar, and remaining oil. Top with the cheese; serve with the chicken

If you are a fan of turnips, now is the time to plant a few. I try to get mine planted before Labor Day. Tokyo Cross is my favorite - a sweet mid-sized turnip amost as round as a ball. Raw or cooked - they are delicious.

Cool your home naturally: Open windows on cool summer nights. Use energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs (they emit less heat). Hang washing out to dry, and grill food outside. I attend a breakfast meeting there every week, and either Jewel or Marsha put a coffee cup in my hand before I take a seat. Good Eggs.
Breakfast at Friendly Family is hometown good. Fresh ingredients are cooked to perfection in an atmosphere as friendly as your grandmother's kitchen. It's a "feel good" place where everyone knows your name.

Good asparagus, that is, asparagus cooked to perfection is a culinary treat. The Brickhouse Restaurant in Davidson is a very good restaurant with a large menu. It is known for it's handmade pizzas and large selection of beverages, but I am a fan of the roasted asparagus. I don't know how they do it, but they certainly do it well.
Last evening we enjoyed dinner with friends there, and I ordered the baked chicken with roasted asparagus. It was, as always, excellent!

THE JITTERBUG IS NOT JUST A DANCE!

There aren't many things that work as well today as they did 50 years ago.
But the "Jitterbug" is an exception. A top water fishing plug used for largemouth bass is still as effective today as it was when I was a boy.
The fishing on Lake Norman is great this time of year as long as you go in the early morning or late evening.
Top water plugs like the Jitterbug are fun to fish, and largemouth are known to follow these loud splashing plugs almost all the way to the boat.
The Lake Norman area is a great place to live, and good topwater bass fishing in the middle of the Summer is one of the reasons why.
Want to have some fun fishing in the early morning or late evening? Use a black Jitterbug and an open-faced spinning reel for a combination that always equals fun.

Mickey & Mooch + Lowes Home Improvement

I don't know if there is a better restaurant in the Lake Norman area than Mickey & Mooch in Huntersville. The place is always packed, so reservations need to be made well in advance. They have a two-page wine list, and a great menu. The desserts, particulary the seven-layer chocolate cake, are primo.
The steaks are great, the crab cakes are full of crab, the sides are fresh, and the pasta is excellent as well. A great dining experience. There is a children's menu as well.
Marilyn and I ate there last evening, and had a great time.
I guess it says something about us, but we left there to visit the Lowe's Home Improvement store in the same area. I put up some new landscaping lights yesterday, and was one light short.
By the way, the Huntersville area has everything - restaurants, shopping, and is a fine place to live. Our daughter lives at North Stone, and really likes it. The Lake Norman area is a great place to put down roots.

Take your boat down to McGuire Nuclear Station this evening to watch their first "Movie on the Lake" The show runs from 8:45 P.M. until 10:45 P.M. this evening. Just anchor in front of the Energy Explorium.
"Madagascar 2 - Escape 2 Africa" is the feature. I don't now about the movie, but what's not to like about a free movie from your boat. You can also drive down to the Energy Explorium on Hager's Ferry Road in Huntersville and watch from the lawn. Refreshments will be available.
I think I'll anchor and fish a bit - it will be a first - movie and fishing at Lake Norman.

Farmer's Markets - good places to meet your neighbors

Area Farmer's Markets are beginning to come alive as early season crops are showing up. Local vegetables, flowers,

cakes and pies, plants, and even jams and jellies are available. We are a couple of weeks away from prime season

when the tomatoes, cucumbers, and sweet corn will be in abundance.

Check out your local market, and see folks you haven't seen in a while. It's a great way to start off a Saturday morning.

Although I am a vegetable gardener myself, I often visit the Farmer's Markets to pick up early items. My cucumbers are

just blooming, so I will try to pick up some for salads this weekend. If you're missing the markets, you're missing a

part of small-town culture. Give them a try.

STUMPY CREEK STRIPERS & A SOAKED GARDEN

Stripers are bunched up in Stumpy Creek. They are following pods of shad in depths of 30-35 feet.
The lake looks to be above full pond as recent rains have moved levels up. I think it's as high as I have seen it. This is great for all manner of fish dependent upon insects work the shoreline.
It's a great time to fish from Lake Norman State Park down as the water is still not muddied up.
My garden is soaked, but everything seems to have weathered the rain OK. Sunny tomorrow and highs in the 80s - great Lake Norman area weather!

Striped Bass at Lookout Dam

The striped bass are hitting redfin plugs at Lookout Dam - at the top of Lake Norman. Best times are when the wheels are turning at the dam - either early morning or late afternoon. The stripers are feeding on baitfish in the rocks. Best approach is on foot at the dam or in a small flat bottom boat. Nothing much more fun than catching a striper on a top water plug.

Great Chinese Food in Mooresville!

My favorite Chinese restaurant in Mooresville is the Lotus at 163 East Plaza Dive. A small place, and not all that fancy, but the service and food are excellent. There is no buffet, but dishes are served in bowls so that parties can share, which is always part of the fun in Chinese restaurants. They have the original Scallion Chicken, which is without a doubt the best chicken entree one can find. The owners, husband and wife, are there to see that every detail is taken care of. I would highly recommend this restaurant for lunch or dinner. The meals are reasonably priced - particularly at lunch, and parking is ample. Give Lotus a try - you won't be disappointed,

Tomatoes are blooming

The Tomatoes are blooming in the Lake Norman Area. Not quite time to break out

your favorite bread and mayo, but around mid-July we should be enjoying tomato

sandwiches. Tomato plants are sporting those light yellow blooms that foretell good

things to come. Everything is green and vibrant - it's a great time of year in a really

great place to live!

This is a great time of year around Lake Norman. Everywhere you go in Statesville, Mooresville, Troutman, Cornelius, Davidson, or Harmony, great things are happening! From the benefit chicken BBQ at Monticello Baptist Church, to the big yard sale at Habitat for Humanity in Statesville, folks are out and about. The weather is great, the garden centers are crowded as gardeners gear up for another season in their yards and vegetable gardens. There is a large inventory of homes for sale in the area, and with the $8000.00 tax credit for first -time home buyers, a lot of bargain-priced properties are closing. I'm glad I returned to this area after college - I don't think there's a better place to live than Piedmont North Carolina.

Crappie and largemouth are moving into shallow water as temperatures rise. Small white jigs for crappie, and rattle baits for largemouth.
Best Lake Norman area breakfast pastry is the cinimon crisp bagel at Panera bread in Mooresville. If you want one, better stop by before 10:00 A.M., or they may be all gone.
